Bolsena

The small town of Bolsena is located at the foothills of Mount Volsini on the north-eastern shore of the lake and along the famous Via Cassia. Bolsena has a small harbour and with its 4240 inhabitants, it is the largest town with direct access to the lake.

Sights in Bolsena

On a hill, the magnificent Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara rises above the medieval district. The building of the castle extended over several phases from the start in the 11th century till the last phase of construction in the 14th Century. Today you can find the Museo Terretoriale del Lago di Bolsena there, which is divided into six sections. Here you can learn about the history of Lake Bolsena and the formation and evolution of different cultures of the area around Lake Bolsena (Etruscans, Romans, Dionysus). Especially recommended is to climb up the castle ramparts to have an impressive panorama view of Lake Bolsena and Bolsena.

The Basilica of Santa Cristina in the centre of Bolsena is divided into four sections: a small underground basilica (Grotta Santa Cristina), the underground catacombs, a Romanesque church (Capella del Miracle) and the chapel of St.Leonard. Especially on hot days, sightseeing of the underground passages can be refreshing and informative at once.

Bolsena & infrastructure

Bolsena has a variety of restaurants (some of them are presented at „Restaurants“), nice bars and cafes. There are three internet cafes in Bolsena, which are all at the pedestrian area. At the two fish shops in the centre you can get fresh fish from Lake Bolsena. But you should better buy your fish in the morning, as the shops may run out of fish towards the evening. Two supermarkets are located in Bolsena - 2 at the city entrance (coming from San Lorenzo Nuovo.
